This article takes a look at the most recent statistics (provisional 2014 annual data as voluntarily supplied by Member States) on the volumes of electricity that have been produced and supplied at the level of the European Union (EU-28), the euro area (EA-18) and at the level of the individual Member States of the EU-28 and of Norway and Turkey.

As illustrated by Figure 1, the supply of electricity in EU-28 decreased by 3 % in 2014 compared to 2013. Member States report bigger values annualy than monthly. Reasons for this vary from Member State to Member State. The biggest difference is caused by Germany which reports on a monthly basis electricity generated only in main activity producer plants.

Main statistical findings

Production of electricity

After a decrease of 0.9 % in 2013, the volume of produced electricity at EU-28 level decreased once again in 2014 by 2.9 % compared to the preceding year.

Table 1 shows the production and supply data for EU-28 and euro area (EA-19). Tables A to J (see: Source data for tables, figures and maps on this page (MS Excel)) show the production and supply data for all individual EU Member States and for Norway and Turkey, by using monthly cumulated data for 2014 (2012 and 2013 data are annual figures).

Luxembourg (-16.2 %), Belgium (-15.7 %), Greece (-10.4 %), Bulgaria (-7.8 %), Slovenia (-7.8 %), Denmark (-7.6 %) and Slovakia (-7.5 %) are the Member States that recorded the largest decreases in electricity production. 

As regards the structure of electricity production in 2014 (Figures 2 and 3):

  • the production of conventional thermal electricity decreased by 7.2 % in the EU-28 and accounted for 47.7 % of total production;
  • the production of electricity by nuclear power plants stayed stable in the EU-28 in 2014 and accounted for 27.6 % of the total;
  • the electricity production by hydro which includes pumped hydro (not necessarily of renewable origin) decreased by 0.8 % while the production by wind increased in the EU-28 by 6.3 % and represented respectively 13.1 % and 8.2 % of the total;
  • the electricity production by solar is not available in the monthly cumulated data.

Norway recorded an increase in total production (+5.7 %). In Turkey, production increased in 2013 (+9.5 %) as compared to the previous year.

The electricity produced by nuclear power plants stayed stable between 2013 and 2014. The largest share of electricity produced by nuclear in the 14 EU Member States that have nuclear facilities to produce electricity can be found in France (77.2 %), followed by Slovakia (58 %), Hungary (54.6 %), Sweden (41.2 %), Belgium (39.5 %), Slovenia (37.2 %) and Czech Republic (35.8 %). Germany that has decided to close down its nuclear power plants during the next decade has a share of 15.9 %.

Electricity supplied to the market

The volume of electricity that is supplied to the market is defined as the total net volume of produced electricity minus export plus import minus the electricity that is absorbed by pumping (pumped storage). As illustrated in Figure 1, the supply of electricity in EU-28 decreased by 3 % in 2014 compared to 2013.

In 2014, the aggregated EU-28 imports and exports of electricity increased by 8.7 and 9.7 % respectively.

When looking at supply statistics at national level, minor increases were observed in Greece (+2.5 %), Lithuania (+1.7 %), Estonia (+1.2 %), Hungary (+1.1 %), Poland (+0.5 %), Croatia (+0.3 %) and Bulgaria (+2.5 %). In Turkey, the supply increased by 8.8 % compared to 2013 while in Norway it decreased by 2.5 %.

The largest decreases in supply figures were observed in Denmark (-9.4 %), Belgium (-5 %), Romania (-4.7 %), Germany (-3.7 %), Slovakia (-3.6 %) and United-Kingdom (-3.4 %).
