Introducing EBSI

The European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) was born in 2018 when 29 countries (all EU members states, Norway and Lichtensein) and the EU Commission have joined forces to create the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP).

EBP’s vision is to leverage blockchain to create cross-border services for public administrations, businesses, citizens and their ecosystems to verify information and make services trustworthy.

Discover and understand what EBSI is, how it works and what are its benefits, by having a look at “What is EBSI” and visit the FAQ’s.

EBSI Architecture

Since 2020, EBSI is deploying a peer-to-peer network of distributed nodes across Europe, supporting applications focused on selected use-cases.

Each member of the network, mandated by the EBP Policy group, hosts EBSI nodes at national level. All the nodes can create and broadcast transactions that will update the ledger. Every node maintains an identical copy of this ledger (the blockchain).

Europe nodes map

Each node of the EBSI network is composed of three layers: the infrastructure, the chain and storage, and the core services.

  • The Infrastructure layer provides generic capabilities and connectivity to Blockchain networks;
  • The Core Services are set of standardised interfaces (APIs) which provide the capabilities for third-parties to develop applications and ensure compliance with guiding principles defined and approved by the EBP;
  • The Chain & Storage layer encompasses, both, the blockchain and the off-chain storage protocols currently supported by EBSI.

What you can do with EBSI

EBSI supports the creation of cross-border services in Europe. Discover what's possible by having a look at the new cases.

View all use cases

Identity (SSI)

Implementing a Self-Sovereign Identity model in Europe, allowing users to create and control their own identity across borders.

e.g. For citizens who want to set-up a digital wallet and manage their identity credentials across borders.

Citizens gain digital control of their educational credentials, significantly reducing verification costs and improving trust in documents’ authenticity.

e.g. For students/young professionals who want to apply for a Degree/job and manage their educational credentials.

Social Security

Social Security competent institution in a Member State can issue the PDA-1 document as a verifiable attestation and an inspector in another Member State can verify it.

Digital wallets

Wallets are applications that let you interact with the EBSI ecosystem. It is a tool to let you manage your account and all your documents on the network. With your EBSI conformant wallet, you are able to store, verify and share information across Europe.
