Transcript of Records

A student gets a master diploma after receiving a transcript of records validated by Erasmus

The project

We started our EBSI journey in July 2021 with two Una Europa universities, KU Leuven and the University of Bologna. Una Europa is an alliance of 11 universities across Europe. Our focus within Una Europa is on the exchange of educational credentials between our partner universities.

In January 2022, our dreams became bigger. We wanted to go beyond the alliance first by exchanging with other European universities and second by including non-educational credentials like identity credentials. We were excited to extend the pilot with the national Spanish pilot project wherein the royal Spanish MINT issues a verifiable identity and the University of Rovira i Virgili issues a verifiable diploma.

This implementation illustrates the exchange of verifiable credentials between these institutions in cross-border settings including Spain, Belgium and Italy. and demonstrates the great collaboration between the three countries.

With universities across 11 European countries, we have over 600.000 active students each year. Every year, the number of students moving increases. To facilitate and promote this mobility, our ambition is to create an, ecosystem in which all students move seamlessly (virtually and physically). One part of this ecosystem consists of the exchange of diploma and credits between the institutions of the consortium and beyond in a secure and a fraud-proof manner. We believe that EBSI can help us achieve this goal.

The scenario

Authentication and request issuance of verifiable ID

Eva, as a Spanish citizen, engages with the Royal Spanish Mint website to obtain a Spanish Verifiable-ID credential.

Access virtual campus Rovira I Virgili and request issuance of verifiable diploma

Based on her digital identity she applies for and obtains a Bachelor Degree from the University of Rovira y Virgili in Spain. The University of Rovira y Virgili issues a Verifiable-Diploma.

Apply at KU Leuven and receive notification academic ID KU Leuven

Eva applies for a Master degree at KU Leuven in Belgium and uses her Spanish Verifiable-ID and Verifiable-Bachelor diploma in the simplified application process. KU Leuven issues a Verifiable-Student ID.

Apply for an erasmus and request issuance of transcript of records

In the context of her KU Leuven program, she goes on Erasmus for a period of 6 months at the University of Bologna in Italy. The University of Bologna issues a Verifiable-Transcript of Records for the credits Eva obtained.

Share transcript of records with KU Leuven

In order to get her diploma at KU Leuven in Belgium, she needs to share the list of course taken in Italy that is verified and recognized by KU Leuven.
