Member States discuss status of Once-Only in June 2024 SDG Gateway Coordination Group

27 June 2024 |

On 18-19 June 2024, members of the Single Digital Gateway (SDG) coordination group met in Brussels. On 18 June, representatives from each member state discussed first the implementation of the Single Digital Gateway Regulation ((EU) 2018/1724). On 19 June, discussions focussed specifically on the implementation of the Once-Only Technical System.

The Single Digital Gateway Regulation mandates the creation of a technical system for the automatic exchange of evidence by public authorities (the Once-Only Technical System). When completing cross-border administrative procedures, EU citizens, residents and businesses can request that specific evidence needed to complete these procedures (permits, diplomas, attestations) is shared directly between the issuing and requesting authorities . This saves people time and money and helps public bodies be even more certain about the authenticity of the evidence they are processing. The Regulation currently covers 23 procedure types, in a range of areas such as applying for education financing, notifying a business activity and re-registering vehicles in other EU countries.

On 19 June, Member States discussed the overall achievements so far and strategic priorities for the rest of the year. Sub-group chairs also reported on the ongoing work in the coordination group sub-groups, namely Testing and Deployment, Evidence Mapping, Security, Operational Governance and Technical Design Documents. Certain Member States also presented their ongoing work to onboard the national authorities that will be connected to the Once-Only Technical System (Competent Authorities). As authentic data (such as permits or diplomas) are exchanged through the Once-Only Technical System, Competent Authorities are those organisations that request, or provide, the data.

This meeting of the SDG coordination group followed the recent May 2024 OOTS Projectathon and June 2024 OOTS Accelerator. These are large-scale technical events where national implementation teams work together, supported by the European Commission, to build and implement the Once-Only Technical System.
