eDelivery technical roadmap: updates and future plans

Let us share the latest developments and future plans for the eDelivery sample software solutions. Since June 2024, significant progress has been made on Domibus, DomiSMP and DomiSML. We aim to keep you informed about these updates and what lies ahead.

Domibus updates

Recent releases

In recent months, we released Domibus 5.0.9 and 5.1.6. Both versions are focused on resolving bugs and enhancing stability. These versions bring both Domibus product lines to a more stable state.

Upcoming Domibus 5.2

We are actively developing Domibus 5.2, which will include:

  • Java 21 support: Upgrading from Java 11 to Java 21 for improved performance and security.
  • Jakarta EE framework: Transitioning to the Jakarta EE framework to align with the latest evolutions in the Java world.
  • Two product variants will be released:
    • WebLogic variant: Will rely on Jakarta EE 8, given the current lack of support for a higher version in WebLogic.
    • WildFly and Tomcat variant: Will rely on Jakarta EE 10.

With a growing user base, our focus has shifted towards maintenance and support, occasionally leading to revised timelines for releases.

Domibus 5.2 Release Candidate is expected in Q1 2025.

Domibus 5.2 Final Release is scheduled for Q2 2025.

WildFly phase-out

Due to limited usage and lack of long-term support for this application server, we will phase out WildFly support after Domibus 5.2.

Future plans: Domibus 6.0

Looking ahead, Domibus 6.0 is planned for release in Q2 2026. This version will:

  • Support the eDelivery AS4 2.0 profile.
  • Become a Spring Boot application, enhancing cloud compatibility.

DomiSMP updates

DomiSMP 5.1

We released DomiSMP 5.1 in October, introducing:

  • Document review process: Allows approval before publication.
  • Document templates for pre-configured values.
  • Document sharing: Reference multiple participants without repeating metadata.

As of version 5.1, we have migrated the DomiSMP technical documentation to a new format.

The next version, DomiSMP 5.1.1, is scheduled for 23 May 2025. It will focus on updating third-party libraries and fixing bugs.

DomiSML updates

Currect version: DomiSML 4.3.1

We encourage DomiSML users to upgrade to our latest patch, DomiSML 4.3.1, released in November 2024.

Future plans: DomiSML 5.0

We are developing DomiSML 5.0, expected on 15 May 2025. It will initially* only support Tomcat 10.1 and include:

  • Java 21 support.
  • New administration functions.
  • Improved logging.
  • Multiple network records support.

Along with DomiSML 5.0, we will migrate technical documentation for it to a web-based format for easier navigation.

*Support for WebLogic will only be provided once WebLogic 15.1.1 becomes available. For more details, refer to the Oracle Fusion Middleware Statement of Direction.

eDelivery Building Block

eDelivery is a Building Block provided by the European Commission, offering technical specifications, installable software and services for secure digital data exchange across a network of nodes.

Domibus is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Publisher for publishing and retrieving data necessary for an eDelivery party to dynamically configure its system for message exchange with other parties using eDelivery. It is based on the eDelivery AS4 profile, an open technical specification for the secure, web-based, payload-agnostic exchange of data or documents. There are numerous other products and services currently conformant with the eDelivery AS4 1.15 profile. We invite projects to browse the full list before choosing their AS4 software.

DomiSMP is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Publisher for publishing and retrieving data necessary for an eDelivery party to dynamically configure its system for message exchange with other parties using eDelivery. It is based on the eDelivery SMP 1.10 profile, an open technical specification for publishing service metadata within a 4-corner network. There are numerous other products and services currently conformant with the SMP 1.10 profile. We invite projects to browse the full list before choosing their SMP software.

DomiSML is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Locator for an eDelivery party to discover the URLs of other counterparties using eDelivery Access Points and their corresponding metadata. It is based on the eDelivery BDXL profile, an open technical specification for locating Access Points within a network, and on the PEPPOL SML Specification, a technical specification defining a BDXL administration API.
