CEF eTranslation powers German EU Council Presidency translator

The European Commission is happy to announce that the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) eTranslation Building Block helps the current German Presidency of the Council of the EU to provide information in all 24 official EU languages.

The EU Council Presidency Translator, developed for the German EU Council Presidency, helps overcome the challenge of providing clear and transparent communication in  around the activities and priorities in all official languages of the Union.

The creation and maintenance of this freely available machine translation service has been made possible by a grant from the Federal Foreign Office to the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and Tilde. The MT integration platform was developed by Tilde for previous EU Council Presidencies with funding from the European Union and adapted for the German Presidency. The platform provides access to translation systems from DFKI, DeepL, Tilde and eTranslation.

This service  is also integrated directly into the German EU Council Presidency website itself. This makes all public communications related to the Presidency automatically available in any EU language, so citizens across Europe can access key information and policy updates in their native language, ensuring maximum transparency.. The tool is an excellent example of how artificial intelligence helps public bodies communicate effectively with citizens and stakeholders in a multilingual environment. You can translate any text, complete documents or even websites to and from all official EU languages. Feel free to try it out at www.presidencymt.eu/!

How does CEF eTranslation help?

The German EU Council Presidency translator is based on collaboration between the private and public sector. It combines the know-how of research and practical application as well as the translation expertise of the Federal Government and the European Commission’s machine translation tool, CEF eTranslation.

CEF eTranslation is a state-of-the-art machine translation tool that covers all official EU languages and others as well, including the recent addition of Mandarin and Russian. With its links to numerous language resources, such as the European Open Data Portal and publicly accessible legal databases such as EUR-Lex and N-Lex, eTranslation enriches the terminology available to the EU Council Presidency Translator, making its translations as accurate as possible.

CEF eTranslation is now also available for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to translate any document or plain text in an easy, free and secure way.
