The European Commission explains how EU Digital Identity Wallets are empowering businesses at this year’s Web Summit

|

Connor Fitzmaurice of the European Commission gave a masterclass about EU Digital Identity Wallets at the 2024 edition of Web Summit, held in Lisbon on November 13.

The masterclass, titled “Empowering Businesses: Exploring the EU Digital Identity Wallets” gave a succinct summary of the project to its diverse audience, with a focus on the benefits for businesses and the key role the public-private sector partnerships are playing in the project.

Public-private partnerships are key to the rollout of the wallets

Of particular note was the discussion of how the wallets are more than just technology, but are instead a critical piece of digital public infrastructure that can help secure the Single Market’s future in the digital age.

Public-private partnerships play a crucial role in the creation of digital public infrastructure like the wallets. Together the public and private sector are accelerating the delivery of EU Digital Identity Wallets, via the Large Scale Pilots and Toolbox process. Clear benefits of this collaboration include:

  • Faster implementation and scalability
  • Higher cost efficiency and resource sharing
  • Better access to expertise and innovation

This collaboration ensures that wallets will be able to meet businesses' needs and help them to reduce administrative burden, and create new business opportunities from digitalisation.
