What is the EU Digital Identity Wallet?

  • EU Digital Identity Wallet explained

EU Digital Identity Wallets are personal digital wallets, issued by Member States, in the form of apps, allowing every citizen to digitally identify themselves, store and manage identity data and official documents in digital form.

  • Benefits of the Wallet

The EU Digital Identity Wallet improves on current e-ID systems, by offering personal digital wallets that are safe, free, convenient to use, protect personal data and can be used all over the EU to identify yourself online and to share electronic documents.

  • Roadmap and milestones

The 2014 eIDAS Regulation was amended in 2021, and in 2022, the European Commission proposed a new regulation that has been approved by both the European Parliament and the European Council. The anticipated adoption of this new Regulation is set for 2024, aiming to make wallets widely accessible across all Member States by 2026.

The EU Digital Identity Wallet will revolutionise the way European citizens and businesses engage with online services by seamlessly integrating convenience, safety and privacy. It will empower citizens, give them control over their data and strengthen our technological sovereignty. By providing a transparent and secure framework, this innovative solution ensures that our personal data remains safeguarded as we navigate the digital world.
