Social dialogue in this sector covers:

  • policy developments affecting the food and drink sector in Europe
  • competitiveness and sustainable employment.

In Europe, the food and drinks industry employs around 4.2 million people and includes over 300,000 businesses. The annual turnover is more than €950 billion.

A major challenge to the sector is the need to increase the attractiveness of the European agro-food industry. This will require the development of a new skills and qualifications framework.

Focus areas

The Committee is currently focusing on:

  • competitiveness and sustainable employment (employability and ageing workforces)
  • common agriculture policy
  • food taxes
