“Europe seen through children’s eyes” has been the motto of an artwork school competition organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Romania and dedicated to the European Year 2010. The activity was planned to take place in four stages: the artwork competition itself, an award ceremony to gather all the 60 authors of the finalist entries, an exhibition and then a public auction to collect funds and help children in need in the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

The competition was organised before 9 May 2010 and involved more than 4200 participants from primary and secondary schools from all corners of Romania. The jury made the selection of the entries in two phases: the first phase aimed to shortlist the best 60 entries as finalists, while the second phase aimed to select three winners in each of the two categories, namely primary and secondary school. Each finalist and an accompanying guardian, either a parent or a teacher, were invited to the award ceremony that took place in Bucharest, on 15 June 2010.

The Representation then organised an exhibition with all the finalist entries, which were displayed at Piata Victoriei Underground Station in Bucharest, Romania, from 25 to 31 October 2010. The exhibition gave visitors the chance to see Europe through the eyes of children. According to the official statistic of how many passengers use the station, it is estimated that about 20,000 people walked through the exhibition on a daily basis.

A final event involved the finalist entries and aimed to collect funds to help children in need. This activity was jointly managed by both the Representation of the European Commission in Romania and Children in Distress Foundation. The event benefited also from the participation of Jenifer Crestol, Jaden Cornelious and Klasikvm Quartet.

The Representation would like to acknowledge the efforts of representatives from the European Parliament Information Office in Romania, Ministry of Education and a number of other institutions that made this activity a success.
