Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia - Croatia
"The Commission notes that there was a first instance verdict against generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac in front of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, regarding their role in the events of August 5 1995. This case is at the moment in the appeal process.
The European Commission reiterates the importance of full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, of which Croatia is a founding signatory party.
In this context, the Commission encourages all public figures to refrain from statements that could call into question the importance of reconciliation and the need to serve justice through the impartial prosecution of war crimes.
We appreciate the efforts made by Croatia leadership towards reconciliation and fostering the spirit of tolerance and trust that Croatia will continue in this vein."
