Commissioner Damanaki meets European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek
With the extended powers provided by the Lisbon Treaty to the European Parliament in the field of fisheries policy, its support will be crucial for the proposals for a reformed Common Fisheries Policy to become law.
After having presented the proposals to the European Parliament Committee on Fisheries [4 MB] on 13 July and having provided further clarifications on a number of issues, on Wednesday 31 August, Commissioner Damanaki met European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, in Brussels.
The discussion focussed on central elements of the Commission's proposals for the reform: the establishment of clear and defined targets for reaching maximum sustainable yield, the elimination of discards and the regionalization of decisions, to move away from centralized micromanagement.
