Treatment, coverage & costs

Doctors

  • In case of you fall ill or have an accident, you can consult a doctor in the public healthcare system (Health Centres or ESY hospital outpatient services), a private doctor with a contract with National Health System (EOPYY) or an EOPYY contracted private doctor free of charge.
  • Please note that EOPYY contracted private doctors have a limit of 200 consultations per month free of charge. Beyond this limit, patients are required to pay for the consultation. Therefore we advise patients to enquire about the availability for EHIC holders beforehand.
  • Just show your EHIC at the point-of-service with your ID.
  • If you consult a doctor at any ESY outpatient services (Health Centers, public hospitals) without your EHIC you will be charged 20€ for the consultation as well as for any other services required (blood test, X-Rays, etc).
  • If you consult a private doctor (non-contracted), you will have to incur the cost.

Dentists

  • Necessary dental treatment is mainly free of charge only at dental units of public hospitals (ESY) or Health Centres where available. Just show your EHIC.
  • EOPYY does not have contracts with private dentists.
  • If you consult a private dentist, you will have to incur the cost.

Hospital treatment

  • In case of an emergency, you can go directly to public hospitals (ESY) on duty or to a private hospital that has a contract with the National Health System (EOPYY-contracted).
  • Hospital treatment is free in public hospitals (ESY). Usually, a doctor will provide a referral for inpatient hospital treatment. Present your EHIC and your ID upon arrival at the admission office.
  • When treatment is provided in an EOPYY contracted private hospital, then you will be required to pay for part of the hospitalisation cost as well as other additional charges according to the contract signed between EOPYY and the private hospital.
  • If you choose to be hospitalised in a private hospital without a contract with EOPYY, you will not be covered with your EHIC and you will have to pay for all costs.

Prescriptions

  • If your medical condition requires medication, then your treating doctor can provide you with the necessary e-prescription for your medication. You can purchase your medication at any private pharmacy as long as you carry your EHIC and the prescription is stamped and signed accordingly.

Ambulance

  • When emergency transport by ambulance is required, you can dial 166 (National Helpline) or 112 (EU help line) to be transported to a public hospital on duty. Emergency ambulance transportation is provided free of charge by EKAV (National Centre for Emergency Care). In case of ambulance transportation provided by private providers/clinics, you will be required to pay privately.

Air ambulance

  • For air ambulance services, you need to contact the National Centre for Emergency care (EKAV - call: 166).

Reimbursement

  • In case you didn’t have your EHIC at the time that medical care was provided and had to pay, contact your national health insurance fund when you get back home to access if you are eligible for reimbursement. Make sure that you keep all documentation including official invoices, receipts, medical reports, prescriptions stamped and signed accordingly by the treating doctor, etc.

Patient contribution

  • If you choose to be treated at an EOPYY contracted private hospital, then you will be required to pay (co-payment) for part of the hospitalisation cost as well as other additional charges according to the contract signed between EOPYY and the private hospital.
  • In most cases, there is a 25% patient contribution to the cost of the prescribed medication.
  • For diagnostic tests in EOPYY contracted private clinics or EOPYY contracted private health providers (hospitals or laboratories), there is a 15% patient contribution to the cost of the diagnostic examinations performed.

Dialysis, oxygen & chemotherapy

  • Free of charge with your EHIC at ESY units / Health Centres or EOPYY-contracted private healthcare providers. For oxygen therapy some additional charges may apply depending on the type of therapy.
  • Pre-book treatment before you travel.
  • If the treatment is provided at a private non-contracted healthcare provider, you will have to pay.
