Berlin receives the European Commission's Access City Award
European Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding handed on December 3rd the Access City Award 2013 to Berlin in recognition of its comprehensive and strategic approach to creating an accessible city for all. The award is organised by the Commission together with the European Disability Forum, and was presented on the occasion of the annual European Day of People with Disabilities conference in Brussels.

Luxembourg closes the European Year 2012 as their “first step toward active ageing actions”

Social economy - laying the groundwork for innovative solutions to today's challenges (France)
Social enterprises are prized for their ability to offer innovative solutions to emerging social needs which are not easily tackled by the public sector or private business. Through filling this gap, social enterprises create new opportunities for growth and jobs. Indeed, they contribute to at least three key objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy - employment and growth, innovation and the fight against poverty.

The closing event of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 was held on December 10th in Nicosia, organised by the Cyprus EU Presidency.

Active Ageing Index 2012 launched in Cyprus at the European Year closing conference
Sweden, Finland and Denmark, followed by the Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom, come at the top of the Active Ageing Index 2012, presented on December 10th in Cyprus at the Closing Conference of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. The index also shows that a majority of the Central and Eastern European countries as well as Malta and Greece have lots of space for improvement when it comes to their active ageing policies.

Prime Minister Mario Monti participates in the closing event of the European Year in Rome
Large crowds and media gathered at the Italian National Closing Event of the European Year 2012, which was held on 4 December at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Rome in the presence of Prime Minister Mario Monti and various high level speakers and celebrities.

The Council of the European Union adopts the Guiding Principles for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations
The Council of the European Union adopted on 6 December the Guiding Principles for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, which should serve as a checklist for national authorities and other stakeholders on what needs to be done to promote active ageing beyond the European Year 2012. Each of the 19 Guiding Principles, jointly agreed by the Social Protection and the Employment Committees, relate to one of the three dimensions of the European Year: employment, social participation and independent living.

Portugal celebrates the national closing event of an inspiring European Year 2012
The Portuguese closing event of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations on 3 December in Braga was attended by László Andor, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion; Pedro Mota Soares, Minister of Solidarity and Social Security, Maria Joaquina Madeira, National Coordinator of the Year, and by several organisations that created and developed social projects supporting intergenerational solidarity and active ageing, as well as the Ambassador of the Year, journalist Fernanda Freitas.

The closing event of the European Year 2012 in Malta celebrates the essential role of seniors in society
During the opening address of the conference on 4 December in St Julians which brought the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations in Malta to an end, Mario Galea, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community, stated that the Government has given priority to seniors through various measures.

Denmark caps off the European Year 2012 with the “Active in life - Generations meeting” conference
More than 300 people gathered in Copenhagen on December 4th to celebrate the National Closing Conference of the European Year 2012 in Denmark. Held at the Hotel Scandic, the event was organised by the ministries of Employment, Health, and Social Affairs and Integration, in cooperation with the European Commission Representation and the European Parliament Information Office in Denmark.
