Finnish Government presents Act to ensure elderly people receive high-quality care services
The Finnish Government has adopted a Bill for an Act intended to ensure that elderly people will receive care and treatment according to their individual needs and on an equal basis nationwide through high-quality social welfare and health care services. The Act will specify the responsibilities of local authorities and guarantee better availability of necessary services for elderly people, among other things.

Senior-friendly Communities Austria 2012 awards given in Vienna
The Senior-friendly Communities Austria 2012 prizes were given on 7 November in Vienna during the National Closing Ceremony of the European Year 2012. These awards, organised for the firth time by Volkshilfe and the Pensioners Association of Austria, are given to communities that have distinguished themselves promoting initiatives and projects for the elderly.

The European Quality Framework for long-term care services was officially launched at the WeDO project’s final conference on 14 November, organised at the European Parliament in Brussels and hosted by Heinz K. Becker, MEP and co-chair of the Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity.

MEDEA special European Year 2012 prize awarded to Spanish lifelong learning initiative
The MEDEA special prize for Educational Media Encouraging Active Ageing, set up to coincide with the European Year 2012, has been won by the initiative “All that Jazz”, developed by Fundación Universidad Carlos III and professor Raúl Jiménez, Spain.

Area-based policies in urban areas: how to promote good living conditions for children and youth (Norway)
Based on two schemes in place in Norway, this Peer Review is an opportunity to explore area-based policies promoting good living conditions for young people in deprived areas. The problems in these urban areas are to a large extent related to socio-economic factors; therefore most measures target the whole population while special efforts are aimed directly at residents with an immigrant background. Combatting poor standards of living amongst children and youth, and promoting social mobility in urban areas with poor living conditions is crucial for breaking the transmission of disadvantage across generations and diminishing the likelihood of social exclusion in the future.
