More than 3,800 athletes participate in the 18th European Veterans Athletics Championships
The 18th European Veterans Athletics Championships (EVACS 2012) were inaugurated on August 15th in Zittau (Germany). Held for the first time in three countries (Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic), competitions will take place over a course of 10 days, until August 25.

The current rate of ageing in the European Union is economically unsustainable, according to researchers
The current rate of ageing in the European Union is economically unsustainable. This is the main policy message from the LEPAS collaborative project (Long-run Economic Perspectives on an Ageing Society), carried out throughout the last three years by researchers from Spain, Denmark, Germany and Austria.

Submissions open for the European Commission’s 3rd Access City Award, recognising accessible and age-friendly urban environments
The European Commission has launched the third edition of the Access City Award, which recognises and celebrates cities with over 50,000 inhabitants implementing exemplary initiatives to improve accessibility in the urban environment.

More than 160 relevant stakeholders participate in the European Commission’s conference on Good Governance for Active and Healthy Ageing
More than 160 representatives from national governments, regional and local authorities, social partners and other relevant stakeholders participated in the conference "Good Governance for active and Healthy Ageing", which took place in Brussels on 4 June organised by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

Occupy Your Own Age demands more action to municipalities in the implementation of new services for the elderly in Finland
A recent survey carried out by the Finnish NGOs behind the Occupy Your Own Age campaign (Valtaa Vanhuus) and answered by over 200 local officials responsible of services for the elderly, reveals that Finland’s municipal authorities are well aware of the challenges and needs of an ageing population. However, the planning of specific services in municipalities seems to bee lagging behind, according to the campaign’s spokespersons.

Rise in the number of scholars aged 60+ working in English universities
A recent report published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) indicates that the number of scholars aged 60+ in English universities has risen sharply over the last years, while the number of younger academics is decreasing.
