Launch of the European Year 2012 Awards: Honouring the best initiatives that promote active ageing and solidarity between generations
As part of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the European Commission is launching the European Year 2012 Awards in order to celebrate organisations and individuals that promote active ageing through their activities.

The Municipality of Limassol in Cyprus marks the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012
Within the context of Europe day, the Mayor of Limassol Mr. Andreas Christou addressed the open discussion on 8 May in the Patticheio Centre for the Elderly in Limassol, entitled "Active Ageing and Culture", by stressing that 2012 was an opportunity for all to realize that Europeans live longer and remain healthier now more than ever, and that we should take advantage of the benefits this offered.

Bavaria awards the first seals of quality to senior-friendly sports clubs
Bavaria's Minister of Social Affairs, Christine Haderthauer, awarded on June 11th 2012 the first “Senior-friendly gymnastics and sports clubs” seals of quality to seven athletic facilities throughout the state.

Three new studies on active ageing presented by the Tárki Institute in Hungary
Tárki Social Research Institute, one of the largest independent research institutions in Hungary, organized on June 1st a workshop on active ageing in Budapest where three new relevant studies were presented: “Intergenerational solidarity in light of national transfer accounts”, “Causes of low employment in population over 50 in Hungary” and “Relations and well-being of older people in Europe.”

Italian football coach Giovanni Trapattoni is not only news these days for qualifying Ireland to play the European Championship for the first time since 1988.
