New United Nations and HelpAge report calls for urgent action by governments to address the needs of the elderly
The number of older persons is growing faster than any other age group, says a new report, “Ageing in the Twenty-first Century: A Celebration and a Challenge”, released on October 1st, the International Day of Older Persons, by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and HelpAge International.

More than 1,350 nominations received for the European Year 2012 Awards
A total of 1,373 interesting and diverse submissions have been received from all over Europe to participate in the European Year 2012 Awards. Launched by the European Commission to celebrate the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the call was closed on 16 September.

Prime Minister Tusk opens the Intergenerational Days for Promoting Activity convention and Seniorforce event in Poland
The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, inaugurated on September 24th the "Intergenerational Days for Promoting Activity" convention hosted at the Torwar Hall in Warsaw by the Ministry of Labour in the frame of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.

More than 800 citizens participate in Bulgaria´s Day of Older People and European Seniorforce event
More than 800 citizens and 30 sports clubs participated on September 23 in a successful festival held in Sofia to celebrate the Day of the Older People and the European Seniorforce Day in Bulgaria. Under the motto "Sport, health and active longevity", the event which took place in Borisova Gradina included several competitions, gymnastic performances and shows.

UNECE Ministerial Conference concludes with commitment to meet the individual and societal challenges triggered by population ageing
The UNECE Ministerial Conference on Ageing held on 18-20 September 2012 in Vienna, Austria, concluded with the adoption of the Ministerial Declaration “Ensuring a society for all ages: promoting quality of life and active ageing”.

Combating child poverty through measures promoting the socio-cultural participation of clients of the Public Centres for Social Welfare (Belgium)
In the European Union, one in five children lives in a household which is at risk of poverty. As families are forced to economise on all but the most basic needs, spending on educational and recreational activities, among other things, tends to be restricted. This is potentially damaging for children's future prospects; experiences in early childhood have a significant impact on outcomes in later life and are thus crucial for social inclusion in adulthood. In order to tackle those issues, a multidimensional, long-term strategy which addresses the deficit in socio-cultural participation is needed.

UNECE region reports progress in meeting the needs of an increasingly ageing population, but challenges remain
Over the past 10 years, UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) member States have made significant progress in adapting social protection systems, promoting health and independent living and adjusting labour markets to the needs of an increasingly ageing population.
