2016 Review of Employment and Social Developments in Europe highlights more employment, less poverty and a changing world of work
The latest annual review of Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE) published today shows encouraging results. Around 3 million jobs have been created and employment has risen, pushing back poverty. However, unemployment remains high, with huge disparities across Member States. Labour markets and societies will need to adapt to new forms of work.

Closing ceremony of the first European Vocational Skills Week
The closing ceremony of the first European Vocational Skills Week on Friday, 9 December 2016 gathered some 600 participants from Vocational Education and Training, business, social partners, chambers of commerce, civil society, think tanks, research bodies and public authorities. More than 900 activities and events registered as part of the Week took place between September and December all over Europe.

Tri-partite opinion on quality and effective apprenticeships and work-based learning
On 2 December 2016, the tri-partite Advisory Committee on Vocational Training (ACVT) adopted unanimously an Opinion on a Shared Vision on Quality and Effective Apprenticeships and Work-based Learning. The opinion represents an important call from governments, trade unions and employers' organisations from EU Member States and partner countries to further strengthen efforts to increase quality and effectiveness of apprenticeships and work-based learning.

Commission organises first European Vocational Skills Week
From 5 to 9 December 2016, the European Commission is organising a first European Vocational Skills Week to inspire people to discover, use and improve their talents and abilities through vocational training. It is one of the ten key actions proposed by the Commission under the New Skills Agenda for Europe, presented in June this year.
