EAN event highlights need for more representation and better conditions for apprentices

On 24 and 25 June 2023, the European Apprentices Network (EAN) brought together more than 30 apprentices from all over Europe. The two-day event was full of lively discussions centred around the current state of apprenticeships in Europe. While there are differences between and within countries, it became evident that there is a pressing need for a comprehensive overhaul and enhancement of apprenticeship programmes continent-wide.

Apprenticeship representation across Europe is as varied as the apprenticeships systems themselves. Some fall within student organisations or labour unions. However, there is a substantial cohort of apprentices caught in a limbo, lacking adequate representation and the voice to articulate their needs and concerns effectively.

One of the highlights of the European Apprentices Network event was a candid and necessary debate on the mental health challenges faced by apprentices, as well as the complex factors that significantly influence an apprentice's life. The spotlight on mental health is a poignant reminder that apprenticeships are not merely vocational journeys but encompass a broader spectrum of personal and social dimensions.

The resounding chorus from apprentices at the event echoes a call for action. They are demanding:

  • more and better representation;
  • adequate access to health services (including mental health care); and
  • adequate living wage.

The timing of this event coincides with the European Year of Skills, which has cast, among its priorities,  a much-needed spotlight on apprentices and vocational education and training (VET).

There is a collective hope that EU institutions, employers, VET providers and all other stakeholders will remain resolute in their commitment to improve the quality of apprenticeships. This commitment should extend far beyond the confines of the European Year of Skills, ensuring that apprenticeships continue to evolve and serve as a robust avenue for skill development and personal growth.
