Lunchtime webinar: 'EU-UK relations: the new deal'

The EC-funded MoveS network (Free Movement and Social Security Coordination) organised a lunchtime webinar on 7 May 2021 at 11:30 CEST.

Since 1 February 2020, the UK is no longer a Member State of the EU and is a third country. However, the EU rules were still applied during a transition period lasting until 31 December 2020, which was foreseen by the Withdrawal Agreement. At the end of this period, the EU and the UK signed the Trade and Cooperation Agreement which came into force on 1 January 2021 as the new deal between the EU and the UK. This Partnership Agreement lays the ground for cooperation between the EU and the UK in a number of domains, including trade, transport, security and environment. Social security coordination also represents a key element of that deal, replacing EU social security coordination rules. These new rules operate in a changed context, notably as there is no longer freedom of movement between the EU and the UK.

The purpose of this MoveS webinar was to shed light on the consequences of Brexit on mobility between the EU and the UK and on the social security coordination rules, which were explored both in the Withdrawal Agreement as in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

Speakers: Charlotte O’Brien, Nicolas Rennuy, Simon Roberts

Moderation: Filip Van Overmeiren
