Live Discussion: What does quality mean in practice? Integrating the apprentice’s perspective

On 11 February at 11:00 CET, the European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) will organise the live discussion ‘What does quality mean in practice? Integrating the apprentice’s perspective’.

Quality apprenticeship schemes are particularly effective in bringing young people from education and training into work. In the EU, 60–70% of apprentices move directly into a job following their apprenticeship. In 2017, the European Commission adopted a Council Recommendation that sets out 14 criteria to define quality and effective apprenticeships. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has also tried to identify the key elements of quality apprenticeships in its guides for policymakers (2017) and practitioners (2020).

Nevertheless, a key question remains – what does quality mean for apprentices? Do the quality criteria of the EU and the ILO correspond to what learners think is important for a positive apprenticeship experience? EAfA will try to find the answers to these questions.

Our live discussion will be hosted by Tamas Varnai, Policy Officer for VET, apprenticeships, and adult learning at the European Commission. The event will be moderated by expert Maria Melstveit.

Speakers will include:

  • Juliana Laskowski,  European Apprentices Network
  • Tadej Gartner, VET Provider at school centre Škofja Loka, Slovenia
  • Maria Angeles Ruiz Gámez, ESMOVIA, Spain
