Commissioner Schmit at informal meeting of Employment and Social Policy Ministers

Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, took part in the informal meeting of employment and Social Policy Ministers in Bordeaux, under the French Presidency of the Council of the EU. The plenary session focused on the impact of the digital and green transitions on the European labour market, as well as on how these can positively contribute to a new European growth model.

The Commission proposed a Council Recommendation in December to set out specific guidance to help Member States devise and implement policy packages that ensure a fair transition towards climate neutrality, by addressing the relevant employment and social aspects linked to the transition in a comprehensive manner.

Investing in skills

The meeting was an opportunity to emphasise the importance of investing in skills for an inclusive and sustainable recovery, with the European Skills Agenda as the guiding policy framework. Its aim is to ensure that the right to training and lifelong learning, enshrined in the European Pillar of Social Rights, becomes a reality all across Europe.

Social dialogue

In the afternoon, there were three workshops on mobilising investments in skills, supporting job transitions, and strengthening social dialogue. The discussions looked as well at ways to encourage social dialogue at the European and national level. As announced in the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, the Commission presented as well an initiative this year to support social dialogue at EU and national level.
