EU-supported largest car tyre recycling plant opens in Groningen, Netherlands

The world’s largest recycling plant for car tyres was officially inaugurated today in Farmsum (province of Groningen, Netherlands) in the presence of the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander. The company Circtec has developed a method to chemically disassemble car tyres into their various raw materials so that they can be reused to produce new car tyres and renewable biofuel.

New social housing opened in Latvia as winter cold bites hard

In the middle of the coldest winter in years, Zirņi municipality in western Latvia opened doors of 32 newly renovated apartments to its socially vulnerable population. The abandoned soviet hostel building has won a second life thanks to a EUR 1.6million investment from ERDF and is an important contribution to the social cohesion of the village.

Inauguration of new EU-funded “Metrobus” between Coimbra and Serpins in Portugal

Today marked the official inauguration of a new transport system, called “Metrobus”, between Coimbra and Serpins (Lousã) whose completion has been supported by €167.8 million from the EU’s Cohesion Fund over two programming periods. The system mainly consists of electric buses but also new transport infrastructure to better connect the Portuguese towns of Lousã and Coimbra, as well as the municipalities of Serpins and Miranda do Corvo.

€1.6 million to modernise railway infrastructure in Czechia’s Ústí nad Labem Region

The European Union’s Public Sector Loan Facility (PSLF), part of the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM), supports the modernisation of railway infrastructure in the Ústí nad Labem region in Czechia with a grant of €1.62 million. The PSLF grant complements a European Investment Bank (EIB) loan scheme worth €1.93 billion which covers 36 actions aiming to upgrade railway infrastructure in Czechia. The Ústí nad Labem project, funded under PSLF, covers 3 out of those 36 actions. The project beneficiary is the Czech national railway infrastructure manager Správa železnic, státní organizace.

€116 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to support Italy and Germany following devastating natural disasters in spring of 2024

The aid package, approved by the European Parliament and the Council, is composed as follows: - €112.07 million for Germany following the damages caused by the floods to the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg at the end of May 2024; - €3.96 million for Italy to support recovery efforts after the floods that hit the Valle d’Aosta region in June 2024.

Marseille tramway extension receives €115 million from the EU

The Marseille Tramway Extension project (ETNS1) has received financial support from the European Union, including a €15 million grant and a €100 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), making up a total of €115 million. The project is part of a broader investment effort by Métropole d’Aix-Marseille-Provence, launched in 2021, with an overall budget of €320 million aimed at enhancing the region's public transport system.

Commission adopts decision to support Hauts-de-France with EUR 11.6 million as an advance from the EU Solidarity Fund

Today, the European Commission approved an advancement payment of EUR 11.6 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to support the French region Hauts-de-France in addressing the severe damages caused by heavy rainfall and rivers overflows in November 2023. The flooding resulted in numerous mudslides, road closures, significant economic losses and forced thousands of residents to leave their homes.

€7 million for new projects on urban infrastructure and energy efficiency in Poland and Czechia

The European Commission is co-financing 3 projects aimed at promoting sustainable urban infrastructure and improving the energy efficiency of public buildings to the tune of EUR 7.3 million under the Public Sector Loan Facility (PSLF) of the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM). The three projects were submitted under the 5th cut-off date of PSLF, which is a blending facility that combines loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) with grants from the European Commission to support a fair and just transition towards climate neutrality across the European Union.

Sustainable and affordable housing to support green growth in Sweden

The Grant Agreement for the Sustainable and Affordable Housing for the New Green Industry and Society (SHERIS) project, which will support the construction of 7 housing complexes in Northern Sweden, has just been signed. SHERIS is financed by the European Union under the Public Sector Loan Facility, which is part of the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM), with a grant of EUR 11 million. The grant complements a loan of EUR 71 million (SEK 800 million) awarded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), bringing the total budget for the project to EUR 142 million (SEK 1.6 billion).

Green mobility in Nantes receives boost thanks to EU support

The Sustainable Mobility Infrastructures for Low Emissions and qualitative Service (SMILES) project has officially started, with the objective of supporting improvements in the transport infrastructure of the French city of Nantes. SMILES is financed by the European Union under the Public Sector Loan Facility, which is part of the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM), with a grant of EUR 30 million. The grant complements a loan of EUR 200 million awarded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), bringing the total budget for the project to EUR 400 million.

Brussels, 7 November 2023 - Commissioner Elisa Ferreira, responsible for Regional and Urban Policy, Paloma Aba Garrote, Director of CINEA (the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) and George Kasapidis, Regional Governor of the Greek region of Western Macedonia are pleased to announce that the Socioeconomic Transition of Western Macedonia project has officially entered into force on the 27th of October with the signing of a Grant Agreement by all parties.
