Polish avionics company expands with EU funds

  • 15 September 2015

Becker Avionics Polska (BAP) has enhance its R&D capability, while expanding its operations internationally, thanks to EU funding. BAP is now in a position to offer additional services for testing electronic circuits at high and low temperatures at a competitive cost.

This funding has enhanced BAPs hardware verification capability and means we can bring more competitive products in a shorter time to market. In the coming years, this will benefit both Becker Avionics Polska and Poland’s Lower Silesian region.

Grzegorz Lis, Becker Avionics Polska

The avionics company develops air navigation and communication equipment such as the transmitters and receivers found in the cockpits of aircraft. The devices designed by its engineers must be thoroughly tested according to strict air safety regulations. However, these tests have traditionally been carried out in specialised laboratories outside Poland. ERDF-funding has meant BAP could acquire the equipment necessary to carry out its own testing and allow it to expand into international markets.

The purchased equipment included a spectrum analyser, thermal chamber, arbitrary generator, as well as various Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) equipment. These additions have enabled BAP to enhance its capability in electrical measurements, temperature studies and other analyses related to the design, qualification and certification of aeronautical equipment.

Bigger contracts, better R&D services

The funding has seen BAP expand internationally, securing contracts for larger and more advanced equipment. In addition, the investment has enabled the company offer its research services to other organisations in the field.

The company has also secured a new contract for designing a combined communication navigation device known as COM/NAV. Other contracts are in pipeline. All this allows BAP to extend its offer and sell equipment for much larger aircraft flying at much higher altitudes.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project extension of the “Modernisation of Research and Development Department at Becker Ltd., designing radio communication and navigation equipment for the aviation industry by purchasing measuring equipment and pieces of infrastructure” project is EUR 41 170, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 14 225 from the Operational Programme “Lower Silesia” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
