New fleet of low-emission buses for Polish municipality of Krosno

  • 14 August 2019

As part of a strategy to implement an integrated public transportation system in the city of Krosno, Poland, this project helped fund the purchase of cost-effective, energy-efficient, and sustainable public buses.

The implementation of the project will contribute to increasing the use of low-emission urban transport in the area of the Krosno. The main goals of the project will be achieved thanks to reducing the level of street noise and exhaust emissions, increasing the comfort level of passengers traveling by bus, shortening travel time, and making the transport offer more attractive.

Dr Tomasz Soliński, Deputy President of Krosno

To help overcome increasing traffic congestion, Krosno is looking to build an integrated public transportation system. The goal is to provide residents and tourists in the greater Krosno metropolitan area with a sustainable transportation system that reduces costs, travel time and air pollution.

In line with this objective, the project helped fund a fleet of new, state-of-the-art low emission buses and construction of the necessary infrastructure, such as bus stops. The project is a joint initiative of the City of Krosno and five neighbouring municipalities: Korczyna, Krościenko Wyżne, Miejsce Piastowe, Chorkówka, and Wojaszówka.

New buses, retrofits, and upgrades

Although the project is a work in progress, a number of important steps have already been achieved, including buying the new buses: 11 Volvo hybrid buses (diesel-electric), eight AUTOSAN buses with a combustion engine, and two IVECO minibuses.

In addition, the project retrofitted older buses with modern features such as a dynamic passenger information system, video monitoring, and gates for counting passengers. The main bus depot was upgraded with real-time monitoring software, new servers and monitors. Many of the region’s bus bays and stops have been rebuilt and equipped with electronic ticketing machines.

Work continues

Currently, the project is refurbishing some sections of roads the buses use, equipping bus stops with dynamic passenger information systems and increasing security monitoring. Work is being done to implement a park-and-ride parking lot system across the various municipalities, along with bike-and-ride stops.
