New 73 km express road to link Nowe Marzy and Bydgoszcz, Poland

  • 11 April 2019

A total of 73.8 km of expressway are being built linking the A1 motorway from the Polish village of Nowe Marzy with the city of Bydgoszcz, via the city of Świecie, under this EU-funded project. The road will be largely completed by 2020.

The road will include two lanes in each direction. It will provide a substantial part of the bypass of Bydgoszcz on the S5 road. The intention of the project is to reduce noise and air pollution in the region, to allow for faster and safer travel, and better connections to the existing road network.

Provision is being made for an extra lane in each direction to be built in the future, should the need arise.

Included in the project are the construction of nine new road junctions, reconstruction of four existing road junctions, and construction of five service areas.

The objectives of the project are:

ensuring comfortable long distance travell at high speed, while increasing road safety;improving road connections in Poland, by linking the new road with the existing road network;increasing the efficiency of road transport by eliminating bottlenecks, leading to a better flow of people and freight, with higher economic, social and territorial coherence; and improving living conditions in neighbouring areas thanks to lower noise and traffic levels and reduced emissions.

The road forms part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), a network of roads, railway lines, inland waterways, inland and maritime ports, airports and railroad terminals in the 28 member states. The aim is to ensure efficient, safe and seamless transport for passengers and freight. It builds on existing and planned infrastructure in these states. The total length of the network is 138 072 km of railway lines and 136 706 km of roads.
