Modernising water, sewage management in Radom, Poland – stage three

  • 11 April 2019

The city of Radom in Mazowieckie, Poland, along with the municipalities of Zakrzew and Jedlina Letnisko, are to benefit from a major upgrade of the local waste water and water supply systems. The improvements will see around 7 000 new users connected to a modern water supply network and about 15 000 new connections to high-quality waste water collection and treatment infrastructures. This is stage three of a wider project to improve local water supply and sewerage systems.

In addition to modernising the local waste water treatment station, this project covers the following works:

Construction of a sanitary sewerage system with a length of 32.1 km; Modernisation of sanitary sewerage system with a length of 68.5 km; Construction of rainwater sewerage system with a length of 13.1 km; Modernisation of sewerage treatment plant in the sludge range; Construction of a 9 km water-pipe network; Modernisation of the 26.7 km water supply network; andThe introduction of intelligent network management systems (SCADA system).

Together with non-domestic discharges, the combined pollution load after the completion of the project is around 353 000 PE. PE, or pollution equivalent, is a ratio calculated by dividing the sum of the pollution industry produces in 24 hours, by the pollution in household sewage one individual produces in the same time.

Environmental benefits

The project ensures conformity and compliance with an EU directive relating to waste water treatment as well as Poland’s National Programme for Urban Waste Water Treatment in municipalities with more than 10 000 residents.

In addition, the revamp tackles some existing environmental problems relating to risks to human health, pollution and climate change. The improved systems provide better protection of biodiversity, more efficient use of water resources and greater resilience to climate change.

This project is stage three of a wider scheme to improve water and sewerage networks in the area. Stages one and two were completed thanks to a EUR 60 million investment from EU funds earmarked between 2007 and 2013. The local waste water system serves around 217 000 people, while the water supply network delivers clean water to 225 000 residents.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Modernisation and development of water and sewage management in the agglomeration of Radom – stage III” is EUR 83 507 292, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 43 279 668 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Environment and resource efficiency”.
