Building a new terminal and extending runways, aprons and taxiways at Iasi International Airport in north-east Romania will benefit both passengers and operators by improving capacity, especially at peak times.

The programme of modernisation will allow the airport to increase the number of passengers it can handle to 1.5 million per year until 2042. The new 3 400 m2 terminal, knows as T3, is to be built alongside the existing terminals (T1 and T2), and will be able to cope with 450 passengers an hour at peak times. Developing the airport should also bring significant time savings for travellers.
In addition to building the new terminal, the project provides 2.4 km of new runway, 265 metres of new taxiway and extended apron space, which can provide parking for seven aircraft. Extending the current taxiway will link the apron with both the new and existing runways. A lighting system, power plant and a rainwater sewerage network also form part of the investment.
International importance
National and international travellers will benefit from the development of Iasi Airport, which is part of the EU’s trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The EU is spending billions of euros through the TEN-T programme to improve transport infrastructures across Europe. The goal is to make it easier for people and goods to move in and between the member states.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Developing and modernisation of Iasi International Airport” is EUR 56 744 990, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 38 688 091 from the Operational Programme “Transport” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Modernisation and development of the national transport infrastructure aiming at sustainable national transport system”.
