Interactive Institute Sonic Studio

With European Regional Development Fund financial support, the town of Piteå in northern Sweden tapped into the field of sound and music in search of new opportunities for boosting local development. Seeking to diversify from more traditional industries, Piteå has invested since 2003 in an entrepreneurship stimulating environment around an existing School of Music in a partnership with the Swedish national Interactive Institute. By mid-2007, the Studio has scored a number of successes. The most significant is DigiWall, a combined interactive climbing wall and computer game, and music applications in healthcare for therapeutic healing where the applications are adaptable to the patients actual physical status, etc.

Competence Platform for Artists

Being a good artist, ‘knowing how to perform on stage’ is no longer enough for an artist to stand her/his ground in today’s labour market, which is characterised by high shares of self-employment, unemployment and involuntary part time or short time jobs. Increasingly important is that an artist acquires entrepreneurial skills to complement his or her artistic competences. However, self-marketing, business planning, or calculation of prices have been given no room in the traditional curricula of universities of the arts.

A company specialised in digital information systems developed a smart, PDA (personal digital assistant)-based guiding system to be used within museums and tourist sites and pilot implemented the project in partnership with a museum of Bremen.

WellLabs: WellTeknian käyttöönoton koordinaatiohanke

The objective of the WellLabs project has been to build up an innovative and customer oriented development environment called WellTeknia, which is designed especially for the development and commercialisation of health care related information and communication technologies (ICT) and services. The idea has been to strengthen the development and commercialisation activities of the local health care industry cluster and to derive more benefit from the local investments to health care research and education.

The Warhol City project in Medzilaborce, located in Eastern Slovakia, combined the development of tourism infrastructure with city marketing activities. All activities were inspired by the style of the world famous artist Andy Warhol whose family originally came from the region.

Creation of Integrated Virtual Library Information System

Preservation of cultural heritage in a digital forms is increasingly seen not only as a means of safeguarding social and historical art-forms and traditions, but also as an opportunity to promote, exploit and disseminate widely the rich and diverse cultural heritage of European countries. In this context, the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture drafted a “Concept of Digitisation of Lithuanian Cultural Heritage”, which was approved in 2005 by the Government. This led to the launch, in 2005, of the Integrated Virtual Library project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Porto Digital

The Porto Digital project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, aimed to broaden the use of the Internet by the citizens of the city of Porto. It aspired to boost the quality in education, particularly through an increased use of information and communication technologies on all levels of education; reduce bureaucracy and increase efficiency of the city council services; decrease the number of information-deprived people particularly those with social problems; and contribute to a better quality of life in the urban area for inhabitants, workers and tourists.
