Emission-free buses cut pollution, energy use in Braga, Portugal

  • 21 November 2019

The public transport provider in Braga, northern Portugal purchased six electric buses, which now operate on two of the city’s busiest routes. The investment was made through a project called Clean Bus Fleet: Sustainable Mobility, which received backing from the EU’s Cohesion Fund. The buses have contributed to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and noise. Their operational rollout has helped operator Transportes Urbanos de Braga (TUB) deliver more reliable and comfortable services.

These emission-free buses, 100 % electric, mark a new phase in the history of urban public transportation in Braga. Today, we take an important step in promoting more sustainable urban mobility in our municipality and reinforce our commitment to improve the quality of life of our citizens and their environment.

The new 100 % electric vehicles have replaced diesel buses that were more 20 years old. The University-Train Station route is now exclusively served by the zero-emission buses fleet. The District Hospital Route partially operates with the new buses.

The clean vehicles boast an innovative braking system which converts kinetic energy into stored electricity. This helps to extend the buses’ battery life and rationalise operating costs. Proper braking on Braga’s hilly routes delivers energy regeneration rates of 40 % compared with 35 % on flat roads.

Positive impact

Figures for first 11 months of operation reveal the buses are already having a positive impact in Braga. Between October 2018 and August 2019, primary energy consumption was reduced by 74.5 % while operational costs were down by 67 % compared with the old, diesel buses. In addition, emissions of CO2 were reduced by 225.6 tonnes and nitrogen oxides by an estimated 6 767 kg. Meanwhile, output of particulates (PM2.5 and PM10) was reduced by an estimated 304.6 kg. The swap to electric enabled TUB to save approximately EUR 60 000.

The project provided technical training for drivers who were used to driving more conventional vehicles. TUB and the vehicle supplier prepared an intensive training programme to help the drivers deliver a smooth and efficient journey. For example, the District Hospital is located on a hill, which demands special driving skills with these electric vehicles.

Popular service

According to TUB, Braga’s residents are enjoying the new buses and the level of comfort they provide, which is borne out by increased numbers of passengers and increased ticket sales. In general, the project is helping to decarbonise Braga and improve the city’s quality of life. The electric-powered buses are compliant with the EU’s Euro Stage 1 emissions regulations.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Clean Bus Fleet – Sustainable Mobility” is EUR 2 808 502, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 1 415 489 through the “Sustainability and Resource Use Efficiency” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Promoting low-carbon strategies for all types of territories”.
