418 modular resuscitation beds already deployed for Île-de-France hospitals

  • 21 July 2021

While the Covid-19 epidemic put the resuscitation services of French hospitals to the test, the Île-de-France region conducted a programme to improve support for patients, thanks to new beds and more modern resuscitation equipment.

In February 2021, on the eve of the third peak of the epidemic caused by Covid-19, the 10 million euro investment programme, managed by the Île-de-France region with support from the European Union and the “React-EU” programme, allowed about fifty healthcare facilities to create or modernise 421 temporary intensive care beds.

Over the course of approximately three weeks, 48 hospitals in the Île-de-France region acquired some 421 temporary intensive care beds. This mechanism, which became indispensable because of the pandemic, should enable continuous care units to turn into intensive care units to deal with crisis situations. Resuscitation beds capacity has increased by 29% as a result.

State-of-the-art equipment

The programme developed by the region with EU support also includes financing for 532 monitors and respirators. A whole fleet of new equipment necessary for patient resuscitation now supplements the existing equipment. Patients will benefit not only from secure care, but also from modern equipment.

It was the National Professional Council of Anaesthetists and Resuscitators who initiated this temporary resuscitation programme, deeming it necessary to strengthen hospital capacity on the eve of the third peak of the Covid-19 epidemic, when the pandemic had already placed resuscitation services under strain.

Optimised patient care

The project relied on the UniHA central purchasing office, recognised for its rapid order fulfillment; Philips was selected for the temporary resuscitation equipment. Technology plays a big part, as the new resuscitation beds and equipment enable patient monitoring by artificial intelligence, making it possible to inform caregivers about the patient’s needs.

In this way, the responsiveness of the new monitoring and ventilation equipment optimises patient care. And the feedback is unanimous: the quality of care offered to patients has improved by more than 90%. Furthermore, the teams come out of the deal as winners too, benefiting from better teamwork conditions and better organisation.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the “418 Modular Resuscitation Beds Already Deployed for Île-de-France Hospitals” project is EUR 10 000 000, with the European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 4 000 000 through the ERDF-ESF Île-de-France et Seine operational programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
