Green power for residents of 3 Polish municipalities in Lower Silesia

The EU-funded Eko-Municipality project provided grants for residents and public entities to install solar panels, heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and public buildings in the municipalities of Głuszyca, Niechlów and Nowa Ruda in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. This contributed to lowering electricity bills and improving air quality, which in turn improved residents’ quality of life and the image of the municipalities.

Connected vehicles research in Oberösterreich promises safer, better-managed traffic

A project in the Austrian region of Oberösterreich is developing technology that could reduce traffic jams while making driving greener and safer. The Connected Vehicles project has designed algorithms and testing environments for computer programs that help drivers use roads more efficiently and allow vehicles to better interact with other vehicles and their surroundings. The technology could help to cut down pollution from driving, make commercial and public transport more profitable, improve road safety, and reduce the need for new transport infrastructure.

VIRUS: Visitor centre for electric lorry route built in Sweden

The first fossil-free electric road in the world for lorries, route E16 outside the town of Sandviken in North-Central Sweden, was inaugurated in June 2016. Construction of the road attracted considerable interest, both in Sweden and abroad, and the EU-funded subproject ‘Hosting, innovation, regional development and synergies around electric roads for fossil-heavy logistics – VIRUS’ built a visitor centre to host field trips to the site.
