Warsaw’s electric-powered bus fleet beneficial for passengers and the environment

  • 09 May 2018

The purchase of 130 low-floor, low-emission buses increases accessibility to public transport in Warsaw and the wider region.

The new 18 metre-long articulated buses also offer increased comfort for travellers. They are all air-conditioned and come equipped with an audiovisual, on-board passenger information system. Each bus is powered by an electric engine which allows for fast charging of batteries. 19 recharging stations are to be located at end stops on the bus routes. The new fleet should also lead to a reduction in maintenance requirements and associated costs compared to older types of buses.

Improving city life

The investment represents an expansion of public transport services in Warsaw, which benefits local people and those visiting the city centre from further afield. By providing modern rolling stock and improving the quality of services, the city hopes to attract more people to public transport and consequently leave the car at home. The bus fleet’s low-emission credentials means less air pollution, which in the long run should improve living conditions and boost the city’s image.

The environment-friendly buses are expected to come into service in January 2021.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Purchase of bus fleet (130 low-floor low-emission buses) with associated infrastructure” is EUR 95 917 874 with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 41 353 643 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Development of low emission public transport in cities”.
