The EU Tax Symposium returns for its second edition and our website is now live!
From the afternoon of 24 October to 25 October 2023, the European Parliament and the European Commission will co-host the second EU Tax Symposium, with the theme "The future of taxation in the EU: challenges ahead & changes needed".
Further details on the packed programme and confirmed speakers have now been published on our website. Stay tuned: registrations open in early September.
New training courses for customs officials on customs equipment (30/08/2023)
The EU-funded Customs Control Equipment Instrument (CCEI) allows Member States to purchase, maintain, and upgrade state-of-the-art customs equipment such as new scanners, automated number plate recognition systems, sniffer dogs, and mobile laboratories for sample analysis.
The European Commission is now making available new e-learning modules for customs officials to help them learn more about the tools available to them, and ultimately to continue playing their crucial role in EU society. Courses are restricted to serving customs officials.
Updated national planning for UCC IT systems (30/08/2023)
An updated consolidation of the national planning information from Member States has been published. The planning relates to the IT systems required under the Union Customs Code (UCC).
Earlier this month, the European Commission published the 2023 Annual Report on Taxation. The report presents an indicator-based analysis of the design and performance of Member States’ tax systems and aims to provide policymakers across the EU with key insights that can help them to improve the functioning of their tax systems.
VAT fraud: Workshop for payment service providers (27/07/2023)
To help combat VAT fraud, payment service providers will begin transmitting information on certain cross-border payments from 1 January 2024. On 15 September, DG TAXUD organises a workshop for industry to discuss the implementation of the new rules.

Customs Laboratories European Network holds its 8th International Seminar (27/07/2023)
200 participants from 45 countries gathered in Berlin this month to share their experience and discuss current and future challenges faced by customs laboratories. The fight against narcotics and doping chemicals, fuel frauds and tariff classification of food additives/components were some of the issues discussed where the customs chemists play a key role. In addition, the Seminar was largely dedicated to green customs and the role played by customs laboratories.

Ukraine: Commission extends customs duty and VAT waiver on imports of life-saving goods (26/04/2023)
On 17 April, the European Commission extended for ten requesting Member States the existing possibility to temporarily waive customs duties and VAT on the importation from non-EU countries of food, blankets, tents, electric generators and other life-saving equipment destined for Ukrainians affected by the war.
Further progress was made in April on the CBAM, the EU’s landmark tool to put a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon intensive goods that are entering the EU, and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries.
On 18 April, the European Parliament approved the political agreement of December 2022. And on 25 April, the CBAM agreement was also formally approved by the Council of the European Union. The co-legislators will now need to sign the new Regulation before it is published in the Official Journal of the EU. The CBAM will then start applying in its transitional phase as of 1 October 2023.

EU Customs: A look back at the issues to tackle in the upcoming reform (29/03/2023)
One year ago today, the Wise Person’s Group on the Future of Customs published its recommendations on the next steps for the EU Customs Union. In particular, the group’s report advocated making EU customs more coherent and simpler for businesses, more useful in supervising supply chains and more agile dealing with the digital and green transitions. Later this spring, the Commission will come forward with its proposals on how to get us there!
