CATALONIA SAVE FOOD: Catalan awareness campaign to fight food losses and food waste

The Catalan Government launched a campaign between 26 September and 17 October to raise awareness about the issue with several activities, including collaborations with chefs, gleaning actions, a workshop and an exhibition.

Food Waste Challenge hosted by KU Leuven and Erasmus Mundus Association

To mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the European Master in Sustainable Food Systems (FOOD4S) and Erasmus Mundus Association are hosting a social media campaign with a challenge to create awareness and engage citizens in reducing food loss and waste in their daily life.

World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 and Banco Alimentar: 400 tonnes of food saved from becoming waste in Lisbon

World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023 and Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome have partnered, launching ''Dont waste:Share!'' campaign, encouraging pilgrims to place leftover packaged food into designed boxes, which were redistributed to charities helping people in need.

High-level event in Valencia setting a spotlight on food loss and waste reduction strategies

World Sustainable Urban Food Centre of València (CEMAS) and the European Food Information Council (EUFIC) hosted a hybrid event on 3 October. The event included panel debates, keynote speeches on global and national perspectives, promoting collaboration and dialogue across the food value chain.

The Italian Association of Automatic Distribution (CONFIDA ) and Fonazione Banco Alimentare Onlus signed an agreement to reduce food waste, involving more than 500 companies for the collection of surplus food from vending machines.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland project: robust food waste management method in Finland
The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) project will develop food waste management method for all food services, including public and private companies. It will address the measurement and data follow-up, collection and sampling, improving overall food waste culture, as well as it will study how to prevent food waste by increasing communication and dissemination.

The European Consumer Food Waste Forum: Evaluation of consumer food waste prevention interventions

The European Consumer Food Waste Forum has gathered data and evaluated 78 interventions by various actors across the EU to reduce food waste and change consumers’ behaviour. The evaluation shows that the success of an intervention depends on the combination of practices put into place and the actor implementing the intervention.

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a literature review, identifying types of interventions conducted at consumer level and their effectiveness in reducing consumer food waste. The findings of this review help to summarize the most recent evidence on food waste reduction efforts and demonstrate the gaps, which need to be addressed in the future research.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland has published a study on food waste and its climate impact in urban and suburban regions in Finnish households

The study reveals the amount and quality of food waste in mixed waste and separately collected biowaste in Finnish households, and aims to estimate the unnecessary climate impact of lost food and to assess the validity of the chosen methodology.

University of Tuscia and Thünen Institute of Market Analysis publish results of a series of semi-structured interviews with Producers’ Organisations (POs) in Germany and Italy. The study demonstrates the key role of POs in increasing farmers’ bargaining power in respect to the buyers in both countries.
