Narrowing the digital divide across the Swedish and Norwegian border

Cross-border regions with significant urban populations present numerous opportunities for cooperation across borders in areas such as education, health, transport, the labour market, or digital infrastructure. However, remote areas face a high proportion of non-tech-savvy elderly residents, dealing with increasing depopulation, and are often forgotten.

In this context, the BROADEN project, implemented between Sweden and Norway, is a success story of how to make less densely populated areas more attractive for businesses and inhabitants. Concretely, the project enabled the deployment of a cross-border fiber cable that was installed underwater from the Swedish side and extended to reach a telecommunications cabinet on the Norwegian side. The fiber lines were connected to Norwegian businesses and households, providing remote areas with high-speed internet for the first time. Read more about this success story here.
