The Commission has adopted two Interreg programmes worth €176 million to make the Alpine Space region more competitive and greener in the period 2021-2027. Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said: “The Alps and the pre-Alps are a beautiful but also a particularly fragile area. The Alpine region has warmed twice as much as the global average since the late 19th century. These programmes will help the Alpine region adapt to the effects of climate change and support the green transition. Moreover, they will foster innovation and digitalisation to make the Alpine region more competitive.”

The Interreg Alpine Space programme receives an EU contribution of €107 million. This programme puts a strong focus on investments for a more resilient and greener Alpine region, by investing in the small and medium businesses in the fields of sustainable agriculture, bio-economy and forestry.

The Interreg France-Switzerland programme will receive an EU contribution of €69 million. The programme will focus on carbon neutrality, the ecological transition, a competitive economy, sustainable mobility, tourism and culture as well as the reduction of obstacles at the franco-Swiss border such as those related to life-long-learning Finally, the Interreg programmes for the Alpine Space will contribute to reach the objectives of the EU Strategy for the Alpine region.

The new Interreg 2021-2027 is built around four strands: cross-border (Interreg A), transnational (Interreg B), interregional (Interreg C) and integration of outermost regions in their neighbouring environment (Interreg D).
