Annual activity report 2019 - new brochure highlights Cohesion Policy achievements

Cohesion policy plays a key role in Europe’s future. It is a first responder in the COVID crisis and a linchpin of the recovery package. In the longer term, it will be a cornerstone of the Green Deal for all regions, with no one left behind. Over the years, regional policy has constantly offered expertise in transition, structural transformation and policy implementation. In this respect, our budget helps to turn the Union’s priorities into results that make a difference to people’s lives.

The Annual Activity Report (AAR) provides an overview of the performance, management and protection of our 2019 budget. In the context of our responsibilities both present and future, the report underlines how cohesion policy supports Europe’s regions and people rise to the challenges of the digital revolution and the green, climate-neutral economy. The AAR also helps to highlight REGIO’s role as a source of expertise and capacity in transitions and structural transformations. In that regard, the report shows why cohesion policy is a key tool to address current challenges in Europe.

This summary brochure gives a brief overview of our achievements in 2019. For example:

  • Over 400 000 firms received support to improve their productivity and competitiveness. As a result, nearly 110 000 direct jobs have been created, sustaining the employment rate in many Member States.
  • With our support, 20 000 firms have collaborated with research institutes and nearly 37 000 researchers have benefited from improved research infrastructure.
  • Over 170 000 households benefit from improved energy performance of their homes.
  • Through cohesion policy, 27.5 million more citizens benefit from modernised health services– from clinics to hospitals.
