INTREPID: Intelligent Toolkit for Reconnaissance and Assessment in Perilous Incidents

date: 26/10/2021
Many challenges arise in the immediate aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster. First responders must deal with pressing and dramatic challenges in a chaotic and dangerous environment while locating and rescuing victims and neutralising threats. There is the need for quick decision-making, but the disaster area can be large, complex or hostile, with many areas unsafe to explore. The lack of reliable information and the deep uncertainty present serious obstacles to a quick and effective response.
The INTREPID project will come out with a unique platform, seamlessly integrating Intelligence Amplification and eXtended Reality concepts with unprecedented Smart Cybernetic Assistants and innovative deep indoor Networking and Positioning capabilities, to improve and accelerate the exploration and assessment of disaster zones. The project will validate its effectiveness in challenging, complex and complementary pilots to support rescue operations in areas that are complex or dangerous to explore.
The idea of the tool is that first responders, always first on the scene of disaster, will be able to immediately start operations without having to wait for specialized teams or for the zone to be fully secured. When these teams arrive, the INTREPID platform will already have provided first responders with an invaluable headstart by gathering reliable information through unmanned aerial vehicles, understanding the situation through real-time environment awareness and extended reality visualization. The platform is meant to be easy to deploy, user-centred, scalable, secured, resilient and affordable.
