Learn about the outcomes of the Daring Cities 2023 dialogues for multilevel climate action

During a multi-day event hosted by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, an official NEB Partner, representatives from governments, intergovernmental agencies, research institutions and broader civil society exchanged on challenges and approaches to respond to the climate emergency in a just and equitable way, amongst others, by discussing the Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda.

 
Scientific Paper: Increasing tree coverage to 30% in European cities could reduce deaths linked to urban heat island effect

Global warming and the expansion of the built environment are expected to intensify the urban heat island (UHI) effect and related adverse health impacts. A new scientific study published in The Lancet and referred to in the Science for Environment Policy Newsletter of the European Commission Directorate-General for Environment shows that increasing tree coverage to 30% would lower temperatures by an average of 0.4°C, avoiding about 1.8% of all summer deaths in European cities and nearly 40% of deaths attributable to UHI effects.

 
European Heritage Days: “Living Heritage” celebrating cultural traditions and skills

1 September marked the start of the 2023 European Heritage Days, with tens of thousands of events taking place in 48 participating countries. This year's theme is “Living Heritage”, which will showcase the vibrancy, diversity and significance of cultural traditions, knowledge and skills across Europe. As from 1 September until November 2023, exceptional sites and monuments will open their doors to visitors.

 
Call for feedback: LIFE programme mid-term evaluation

The European Commission will conduct a mid-term evaluation of the LIFE programme for the environment and climate action (2021-2024) to improve the implementation and help inform the proposal for the subsequent programme.
