How can I create custom licence policies?

In the European Language Data Space (LDS), data providers can freely decide on conditions under which their assets are offered. The LDS software provides a number of policy templates and examples, but providers can create new ones that meet their specific requirements. Let’s see how.

Policies ensure that data consumers understand the terms under which data products can be accessed and used. In the LDS software, they must be encoded with the ODRL vocabulary, in compliance with the Data Space Protocol and the DSSC Blueprint recommendations.

The policy editor can be reached navigating to the "Policies" section and selecting "Create policy". At this stage, data providers have the option to either import a ready-to-use ODRL licence representations in JSON format, or use the interactive policy wizard as described below.

In a first step, the conditions that should apply to the dataset can be selected, specifying requirements such as a licence fee or geographical restrictions to ensure compliance with regional regulations or organisational policies.

To facilitate the policies management over time, it is advisable to assign a meaningful name to each policy. Additionally, a clear and concise description helps potential data consumers to quickly understand the purpose of the policy and the core licencing conditions it entails.

In a second step, data providers must complete any additional information required by the licence conditions selected in the first step.

A simple click on "Publish" will activate the policy, which can be used immediately to create an offer.
