How safe is the European Language Data Space?

Safety, trust and security are central aspects of all Data Spaces, as they aim at creating value for their participants – as well as for the European economy, society and environment – by enabling easy-to-use, secure and trustworthy data transactions. In the European Language Data Space, safety, trust and security are achieved by an interplay of legal and technical aspects.

In particular:

  • Participants remain always in control of their own data, as they don't have to upload it to central repositories. The data remains safe on the users’ server.
  • It is the participants who decide who to trade or exchange data with and which conditions to apply. The participants can choose among several standard, EU-compliant licence models.
  • Participants are validated before they are onboarded in the LDS. Only legal entities that comply with the requirements of the LDS governance rules can participate. Once registered, they can decide themselves which representatives take care of the the various operations in LDS – e.g. offering, licensing, payment, etc.
  • LDS is a distributed infrastructure. Each participant of the LDS connects to the LDS through the LDS data space connector software. As mentioned, each participant decides which of their colleagues take over certain roles operating the LDS and their own LDS connector. The corresponding personal information and user data never leaves their own LDS connector, because only language data and metadata is exchanged.
  • The LDS governance framework ensures compliance with EU laws and regulations, providing full transparency in all roles and operations, as well as adhering to relevant EU laws – for example, Intellectual Property Rights and Data Protection regulations.

Rely on trustworthy and secure data exchange – with the European Language Data Space.
