Raising the awareness about the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union at local level

Discover the project EURIGHT, a Network of Towns action funded under the CERV programme and led by a consortium of five cities (Alba Iulia in Romania, Genova in Italy, Gijón in Spain, Brussels in Belgium and Nurnberg in Germany).

date:  12/05/2023

The project had a duration of 24 months and ended on 28th March 2023 with a policy debate on Gender Equality in Europe that took place in Brussels.

What was the aim of EURIGHT?

The project aimed to raise the awareness about the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and, therefore, to engage people in the construction of a strong European Union through the knowledge of the European legal human rights instruments and their connection with citizenship. All activities focused on enhancing communication with the citizens about the role of the European Union in the field of the human rights.

The project included round tables and local events in each beneficiary city, in addition to transnational events with the citizen dialogue format promoted by the European Committee of the Regions.

The tools used to achieve these objectives are the following: an online course on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and European citizenship, the citizen debates organized in the cities of the project partner and the dissemination of information and useful links to know the rights of citizens and how they can act for protecting them.

Why the EURIGHT project was so important?

The Charter became a legally binding instrument with the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon (December 2009). Unfortunately, the Charter is still unknown by many European citizens and, therefore, there is a lack of information about the role of the European Union in the field of Human Rights.

The project EURIGHT was key to contribute to fighting against Euroscepticism through the knowledge of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
