Diversity and Gender Equality in Football. International Experiences of Diversity and Inclusion Management

October 24, Fundación Diversidad –Diversity Charter of Spain-, organized a free webinar together with Leadership Woman Football, named “Diversity and gender equality in football. International experiences of diversity and inclusion management”.

date:  19/12/2022

Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality, offered us her point of view about how sports can help to promote equality, with an institutional message. “Sports can break barriers between people and build bridges that connect them. Football is paramount to prevent and to fight against discrimination”, said Helena Dalli.

The event was a success, with 138 registrations, and many questions asked during the debate. The webinar is post in our Youtube channel and in our website, so other people interested in the subject can watch it.

Sport is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace, as well as solidarity and respect for all people. However, it is still constituted as a space in which stereotypes that reproduce gender inequalities are reinforced. There are few organizations that promote the participation of girls, women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary people and other gender identities and expressions.  In this context, professional sport gains strength as a media scenario where it is possible to raise awareness about the importance of promoting sports practice without discrimination or violence. For this reason, Fundación Diversidad supports inclusion through sport and awareness on this issue.

The webinar speakers were two top women in sports leadership, Marion Reimers and Heidi Perellano, who talked about their experience.

Marion Reimers, is a sports journalist and activist. In 2015 she became the first Mexican woman to be nominated for a sports Emmy and in 2019 she was a commentator for the UEFA Champions League final. He has also worked for television networks such as Fox Sport or TNT Sports. In 2022, she won an Ondas award and is co-founder and president of Versus, an organization that fights against discrimination in sports journalism.

Heidi Pellerano, is Chief Commercial Officer at CONCACAF. She began her career as coordinator of the WNBA's player program, where she developed initiatives to raise the profile of the national league and to prepare players for life after professional sports. She has been Executive Vice President at Wasserman and also worked at OnSport.

María Eugenia Girón, president of Fundación Diversidad and Reyes Bellver, president of Leadership Woman Football, also participated.
