The EU directive 2016/800 on special child protection has entered into force throughout the European Union. It is the latest directive from the set of six EU directives that provide procedural rights in criminal proceedings for people across the EU. In addition, a directive providing access to legal aid has also been applicable since 5 May. This set of rules ensures that the fundamental rights of EU citizens are respected for fair and equal treatment in criminal proceedings and for similar application of rules in all EU Member States. A well-functioning rule of law must ensure that any European citizen can expect fair and equal treatment before the law.
