Last week at the IDAHO 2016 Ministerial Meeting in Copenhagen, Commissioner Věra Jourová reiterated the EU's commitment to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In her speech she highlighted the progress made with the European Commission's List of Actions to advance LGBTI Equality and called the Member States for the support: "I therefore urge all Member States lagging behind, to step up their efforts and team up for LGBTI Equality. This is what it takes to truly improve the lives of LGBTI people across Europe".

The Day represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms.
