The International Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place annually on the 20th of November as a day to remember the people who have lost their lives caused by Transphobia, and to draw attention to the violence and discrimination that transgender people still face today. For the occasion the Commission publishes a new comparative analysis on Trans and Intersex Equality Rights in Europe, which is authored by the independent European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination.

This report draws upon expert knowledge in 30 European jurisdictions and highlights the significant levels of inequality which, despite promising developments in individual countries, transgender and intersex people are confronted with across the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The report also critically analyses existing EU protections for trans people – in particular, the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union – and reveals the comparative absence, both de jure and de facto, of domestic protections against transphobic and intersex-motivated discrimination.
