The second edition of the Disaster risk management online seminars delivered by Coventry University has been successfully completed

Working with the Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre (DRMKC) and the Cooperation Network for Risk, Safety & Security Studies (CONRIS Network), the Department for Disaster and Emergency Management at Coventry University, UK, has completed the second Disaster Risk Management Training online series 2022. The event has attracted 218 registers, including 113 academics from 26 universities: 40 officials from the public sectors, and 53 participants from NGOs and other international disaster management agencies.

The series of 7 training sessions (14 hours) focused on risk assessment methods and relevant intervention strategies. 10 speakers from JRC, CONRIS network institutes and civil protection agencies were invited to share their experience and knowledge. For example, the session delivered by Marzia Santini (JRC) and Ainara Casajus (DG ECHO) introduced the EU-DRM framework and the engagement of stakeholders in the civil protection mechanism, including the academics.

Drs Tiberiu Antofie, Andrea Salvi and Alois Tilloy introduced methods for multi-hazard risk assessment and impact assessment as implemented in the DRMKC Risk Data Hub  methodologies. Dr Ana Paula Oliveira (Institute of Education and Sciences, Portugal) also addressed the assessment methods for coastal risks.

Participants enjoyed the session delivered by Dr Jeroen Neuvel (Saxion University of Applied Sciences). He used an online exercise method to share the use of zoning to mitigate environmental and industrial risks from the Netherlands’ perspective.

Drs Maria Sydnes, Claudia Morsut and Reidar Staupe-Delgado from the Arctic University of Norway and the University of Stavanger shared the philosophical and theoretical foundations of risk and crisis management, including societal and organisational resilience.

Throughout this series, the flagship DRMKC Joint Research Centre report “Science for Disaster Risk Management 2020: acting today, protecting tomorrow” was used as the foundation for participants to obtain further detailed knowledge. The third series is planned for September 2023.
