Workshop on local and near-field tsunami warning in the context of multi-hazard risk mitigation

Experts in early warning for earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis -including meteo-tsunamis- have come together to focus on possible synergies and best practices for tsunami early warning.

date:  05/10/2022

In early October the European Commission with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Civil Protection Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG-ECHO) together with  and UNESCO-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) hosted a workshop on local and near-field tsunami warning in the context of multi-hazard risk mitigation.

This was a unique event where experts in early warning for earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis (including meteo-tsunamis) have come together to focus on possible synergies and best practices for tsunami early warning.

The workshop laid the first steps towards moving beyond the current methods of tsunami warning based only on earthquake detection and towards integrated, truly multi-hazard tsunami early-warning systems.
